How long should you wait to let your cat out of the house?

my family has a bengal kitten whos about five months old. We let cats outside dont let me hear it about not letting cats outside its not going to change so just skip this question. i was just wondering how old is a good time to let them free to rome alone and come back. my mom uses the one year rule but i was just wondering if it can be younger
