What is a good Bolt Action rife for hunting?

I'm looking for a bolt action rife and scope I can take hunting and to the range. Iv been looking around but still don't know what to really get. I'm looking to spend about $750 at most really. I prefer a caliber with relitivly low recoil since I have a bad shoulder. Iv heard .270 or .308 should be good but I don't really know. Scope wise iv had people tell me I should get something in a 3-9x40mm but once again don't know what to really look for. Thanks in advance.
